Biography

Oliver Varban, M.D, is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Interim Section Chief of the the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics. He received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2011.

Dr. Varban’s clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery, diseases of the foregut and surgery for morbid obesity. His research focus includes quality of care and clinical outcomes of bariatric surgery as well as assessment of technical skill using surgical videos. Dr. Varban is the current President of the Michigan State Chapter of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, serves on the editorial board for Surgery For Obesity and Related Diseases and is also Associate Program Director of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative.
