Biography

Dr. English received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. After completing his postgraduate residency training, he entered private practice in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In 2006, he moved to Marquette, Michigan to start a new bariatric surgery practice which was affiliated with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. After working on multiple ASMBS committees, participating in the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, and co-authoring the MBSAQIP standards, he joined the Department of Surgery as an Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2014.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) and previously served as a Board Member of ABOM until Dec 2020. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Surgeons (SAGES).

He is currently co-chair of the Standards and Verification Subcommittee of the ACS Committee on Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for MBSAQIP. He is also co-chair of the ASMBS Item Writing Committee, which is responsible for writing questions for the inaugural Focused Practice Designation exam in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery sponsored by the American Board of Surgery.

He is a recipient of the ASMBS Foundation’s Dr Ronald Clements Patient Safety & Quality Award and the MBSAQIP Legacy Service Award for his impactful contributions to patient safety and quality in the field of metabolic and bariatric surgery.
