ASMBS is debuting a “Fundamentals of Bariatric Behavioral Health” course at their annual ASMBS meeting in Dallas, TX (June 5, 2022). Expert faculty members will provide the foundations of knowledge relevant to the practice of bariatric behavioral health. This one-day course will help bariatric behavioral health clinicians to acquire relevant, evidence-based knowledge and skills, to improve competence in working with patients both pre- and post-metabolic/bariatric surgery (MBS). Material will also be presented by context experts from the disciplines of nutrition and surgery, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of MBS and the roles of various members of the multidisciplinary team. In addition, this course will provide bariatric behavioral health clinicians with a clinical framework and practical tools to use in practice with their patients. All disciplines within behavioral health are encouraged to attend – continuing education credits will be available. Interested MBS providers from other disciplines are also welcome to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, bariatric Behavioral Health clinicians will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the etiology and medical/psychosocial consequences of obesity
2. Demonstrate knowledge about the currently-practiced MBS procedures, outcomes, risks and complications, and the recommended post-operative regimen.
3. Demonstrate awareness of current best practices and guidelines in the BH assessment and management of patients seeking MBS in their practice.
4. Demonstrate the ability to formulate individualized treatment plans and recommendations to address psychosocial factors that may affect the outcome of MBS.
